Seventh-grader Anjali Iyer of Silver Spring won the Lancaster Country Day School Geography Bee on Jan. 12, earning a berth in the next round of the 2017 National Geographic Bee. Fellow seventh-grader Grant Gilbert of Lancaster placed second.
Created and organized by National Geographic, the bee is a competition that tests the students' knowledge of geography. It is open to students across the country in grades four through eight. To advance to the finals in Washington, D.C., in May, Iyer must attain a set minimum score on a written test and then prevail in a state-level contest. Grant will take Iyer's place if she is unable to compete.
