On Saturday, Aug. 18, the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce will host its 23rd annual chicken barbecue at the rear of the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy.
Food will be prepared by Peters' Barbecue and served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meals will include half a barbecued chicken, a baked potato, a roll and butter, applesauce, a whoopie pie, and a beverage. Half-chickens will also be available individually. All prepurchased meals must be picked up no later than 1 p.m.
Tickets may be purchased at any of the following Mount Joy locations until approximately 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17: J.B. Hostetter and Sons, 1225 W. Main St.; Darrenkamp's Market, 945 E. Main St.; and the Milanof-Schock Library. Tickets will also be available at the Chamber office, 62 E. Main St., Suite 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays through Fridays. Prepurchasing tickets is strongly recommended.
Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce coordinator Kerry Meyers said that a big thank you goes out to all of the chicken barbecue sponsors. "Those sponsorships along with many with many Chamber members who volunteer that day and really good ticket presales help to guarantee a successful fundraiser," noted Meyers.
The chicken barbecue is a major fundraiser for the Mount Joy Chamber, which is self-funded by members' annual dues and upgraded memberships, as well as by funds raised by the Chamber Banquet and Benefit Auction held each spring and the chicken barbecue held annually on the third Saturday in August. Funds are used to support the Chamber office - which serves as the official Visitors Center for Mount Joy - and its staff, as well as to promote Chamber members.
Proceeds also support the $4,500 in scholarships that the Chamber awards to local students each year, along with community events such as Music in Memorial Park and visits with Santa Claus. A number of members are also involved with the Chamber Welcome Bags that are distributed to new residents in Mount Joy. The Chamber will celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2019.
