New Red Cross Club Will Hold Blood Drive February 23, 2018

"I wanted to start (an American Red Cross club) to get more students involved with the community," said Hempfield High School student and club president Joseph Wentling.

Joseph's parents, Joseph and Jennifer Wentling, are Red Cross members, and Joseph has held a membership for a number of years as well. Since 2016, Joseph has been an American Red Cross ambassador, volunteering at local blood drives.

In order to launch the Hempfield Red Cross club, Joseph and his parents attended trainings offered by the national club. Due to the involved process of starting a Red Cross club, Hempfield's group is one of the only clubs in central Pennsylvania. By registering, all club members are also American Red Cross volunteers.

"There's a lot of participation in the club," Joseph remarked.

Supporting the club's efforts are Joseph's parents, who serve as club coordinators, and school nurse Deb Krantz, who is the club adviser. Because of the requirements for starting a club, the group formed after this school year began. Thus, the club has only 10 members, but they have been active, participating in the Red Cross-sanctioned programs Holiday Cards for Heroes, Toys for Tots, Feed the Needy, and Vaccinate a Village Global Initiative. The group also planned to participate in Pass the Bucket at a Harlem Globetrotters game on Feb. 25.

The club will host a blood drive on Saturday, March 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hempfield Fire Department, 19 W. Main St., Landisville. Club members will serve as Red Cross ambassadors, assisting donors with the check-in and screening processes. People with all blood types are welcome, but there is a critical need for O-negative and B-negative donors. Platelet and red cell donations are valuable as well. On the day of the event, potential donors may visit www.redcrossblood.org/rapidpass to complete the pre-donation reading and health history questions, saving up to 15 minutes of the appointment time.

Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome. Donations are scheduled every 15 minutes from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. To register, readers may visit www.redcrossblood.org and enter "Hempfield" in the search to find a blood drive. Folks with questions about eligibility may call the American Red Cross at 866-236-3276.

To learn more about the Hempfield Red Cross Club, readers may email Joseph at jgwentling@comcast.net.
