Chamber of Commerce awards scholarships

Each year, the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce (SLCCC) awards business and military scholarships to graduating seniors in the Solanco, Penn Manor and Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) school districts, including students who are homeschooled in those areas.

The recipients of this year's $500 business scholarships are Ella South, Maggie Swarr and Frances Rain.

Ella, who is homeschooled in Solanco, will take a gap year to compete this summer and pursue a mustang makeover, which is a competition where wranglers have 100 days to train a wild mustang and get them ready for adoption. Next fall, she plans to attend Martin Community College to complete a two-year associate degree in equine training and double major in equine business. She plans to return to the Pennsylvania/Maryland area and start a business, which she will call ES Natural Horsemanship.

Maggie, from L-S, will enroll in Belmont University's five-year architecture program. She plans to start her own business restoring run-down homes and hopes to provide high school students with the opportunity to learn about the world of construction.

Frances, from Penn Manor, plans to earn her license as an aesthetician and work at a med spa or aesthetician center to gain experience and clientele before beginning her own solo aesthetics practice.

In addition, Griffin Sweigart from Penn Manor was the recipient of the $250 military scholarship. Griffin first enlisted in the Marines' Poolee Program last October and will enlist in the Marine Corps this September. He will perform maintenance on aerial vehicles.

Applications for the 2024 scholarship will open in early January 2024. The SCCC is looking for more military applicants next year.
