GEARS Sets Programs

GEARS has posted its schedule of programs and activities. Unless otherwise noted, separate costs have been set for GEARS members and for nonmembers. For more information or to register, readers may visit http://www.getintogears.org or call GEARS at 717-367-0355.

GEARS will accept registrations for girls and boys in grades one to nine for the BEARS Youth Basketball Program. Players will participate in practices and games from late November through the end of January 2019. The participation levels are grades one and two (instructional), grades three and four, grades five and six, and grades seven to nine.

The draft days for children in grades three to six will be Monday, Nov. 5, for girls and Wednesday, Nov. 7, for boys. On each day, children in grades three and four may attend from 6 to 7 p.m., and children in grades five and six may attend from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. All drafts will be held in the gym at Bear Creek School, 1459 Sheaffer Road, Elizabethtown.

The program for boys and girls in grades one and two will take place on Saturdays only at East High Elementary, 800 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Boys and girls in grades three and four will practice one day per week and play games on Saturdays. Children in grades five through nine will practice two days per week and play games on Saturdays.

Separate fees have been set for grades one and two, for grades three and four, and for grades five through nine. Registration forms will be distributed to all first- to ninth-grade students in the Elizabethtown Area School District schools.

GEARS is in need of volunteer coaches, referees, and supervisors for the program. Anyone who is interested in volunteering may call the aforementioned number or email john_myers@etownschools.org.

GEARS will host a four-hour AARP Driver Safety Refresher Program on Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. The refresher course, open to people age 50 and up who have previously taken the eight-hour 55 Alive course, will fulfill requirements for a continuing insurance discount from any auto insurer doing business in Pennsylvania. All participants must bring a valid Pennsylvania driver's license and evidence of previous course completion to receive a certificate. Registration is required. Separate fees have been set for AARP members and for nonmembers.

Tai chi classes will be offered in the gym at Rheems Elementary School, 130 Alida St., on Tuesdays, Oct. 9 to Dec. 11. Introduction to Tai Chi, for people who are new to tai chi or who have not practiced in years, will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will introduce a simple 10-step Taiji form. Advanced Tai Chi (Forms, Weapons, and San Shou) has been set for 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and will build on the 10-step form by integrating those postures with new moves and, eventually, sword and other weapon forms.

GEARS' 22nd annual two-person scramble golf tournament will take place on Friday, Oct. 5, at the Dauphin Highlands Golf Course, 650 S. Harrisburg St., Harrisburg. The event will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The entry fee per person includes green fees, use of a cart, a steak dinner, and prizes. Proceeds from the event will benefit GEARS.
