Singer/songwriter Paul Simon would have us believe that the more you near your destination, the more you're slip sliding away.

Members of Zion Lutheran Church Leola are taking a bit of an opposite approach. The way they see it, slip sliding is a way to near their destination.

"At Zion, we strongly believe in the commandment of loving your neighbor," said Keith Shetter, one of the organizers of the church's upcoming Family Fun Day. "One way we can do this is by connecting with the community through events like Family Fun Day. Our hope is to create a memorable event for everyone who attends."

Zion Lutheran Church Leola will stage this year's edition of its annual Family Fun Day from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, on the church's grounds at 18 Quarry Road. The event is free to attend, and everyone is encouraged to come out.

"With the start of school being later in the month, this day is a wonderful celebration of summer," said Shetter. "This is an opportunity to share the love of Jesus with our neighbors in a subtle way. With a new pastor, this is a wonderful time to interact with our neighbors and for them to become familiar with the face of our congregation."

Zion Lutheran Church's Family Fun Day will offer two colossal 20-foot water slides for adventurous kids of all ages; a wading pool for younger children; an inflated obstacle course; magic by entertainer Papa Tater; and appearances by local police officers, fire personnel and first responders. In addition, there will be food, music, games and crafts.

Fun for all.

"My favorite thing is seeing all the smiles, interacting with people and letting them know that Zion is more than a church," said Shetter. "We engage with our neighbors and serve our community."

Zion Lutheran Church Leola is a pillar in the Conestoga Valley community. The church hosts Scouting America troops, Steps to Success early childhood development, a community meal on the third Friday of every month and a Refreshing Recreation program on the first Saturday of every month for families facing homelessness.

"Our mission is to be the hands and feet of Jesus," said Shetter. "We live in a hurting world, and to be able to care for our neighbors by providing a day to escape is a pleasure."
