The Millersville Area Historical Society will offer a presentation at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, in the Millersville Borough Administration and Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

Randy J. Harris, an independent consulting historian and education and outreach associate with LancasterHistory, will present "The Boude-Smith Incident - A spark of Resistance in Columbia, 1804, and the Continuing Quest for Freedom." The resistance against the institution of slavery in Columbia and beyond can be traced, according to local and national historians, to an event on Front Street in Columbia in 1804. Harris explained that the family of Revolutionary War Maj. Thomas Boude and the family's young indentured servant, Stephen Smith, successfully resisted the attempted kidnapping and removal of Smith's enslaved mother. Stephen was about 8 years old, and his mother, Nance, was about 35.

A Lancaster resident since 1995, Harris has more than 35 years of experience in the field of historic preservation and community development. His work with LancasterHistory focuses on research and community outreach in connection with the Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History & Democracy - a project he helped launch in 2000 when he served as executive director of the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County. The western Pennsylvania native, who trained to be a journalist, also is a partner with the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, the group responsible for securing listings by the National Park Service for sites, programs, and facilities that have an authentic connection to the Underground Railroad.
