Homestead Days Posted

Plain & Fancy Farm, 3121 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand, will host Homestead Days, a new monthly summer event series celebrating Lancaster County heritage, Amish culture, local food traditions, and early American history in honor of America's 250th anniversary. Held on the third Saturday of each month from June through September, Homestead Days will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Children may take part in a scavenger hunt featuring 13 hidden barn stars around the farm. Kids who find them all may bring their paper to the Barn & Hearth Shop for a small prize. At various vendors and activities, adults may collect stamps in a Homestead Days passport, and they may return their passport for a small gift from Barn & Hearth.

Guests may also enjoy food sampling in Barn & Hearth with a 1776 and Lancaster County focus, highlighting flavors and traditions connected to the region's history. John Hays Cigars will be present on most Homestead Days to educate guests about the making of cigars and Lancaster County tobacco. Attendees may participate in yard games, and face painting will be available for a fee.

Aaron & Jessica's Buggy Rides will offer buggy rides and tours, along with demonstrations on both horse washing and buggy safety. A blacksmith will be on-site to discuss the tradition and skill of shoeing horses.

In addition to these ongoing activities, each month will feature special demonstrations, artisans, and hands-on experiences.

On June 20, Amish quilter Linda Fisher will give a quilting demonstration, and Mennonite artist Elva Hurst will present a free Chalk Talk - "Faces and Trades of 1776" - at the Amish Experience Theater. Using green bean seeds provided by Rohrer's Seeds, Kids may make compostable newspaper pots to take home.

On July 18, visitors may interact with local artisans and makers, including artist Robert Wagner, artist Tina Knox, and a representative of Amish Maide Candles. A make-and-take soy candle activity will be available for a fee. Elva Hurst will present a chalk talk.

On Aug. 15, visitors may converse with local artisans and vendors, including By Candle Light, Lancaster Cast Iron, and Robert Wagner of Lancaster County Shirt Company.

On Sept. 19, Fisher will give a quilting demonstration, a make-and-take pumpkin painting activity will be available for a fee, and Hurst will present the chalk talk "Faces and Trades of 1776" at the Amish Experience Theater.

Additional ticketed experiences will be available throughout Homestead Days, including buggy rides, Amish house and one-room schoolhouse tours, and showings of "Jacob's Choice" at the Amish Experience Theater. Ticketed experience times will vary by date. Visitors may also stop in at the Smokehouse at Plain & Fancy for smoked meats platters and heritage-inspired dishes.
