Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, will welcome Tony Shahan of Flavors of History on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 6 p.m. for a lecture on "Craft, Clues, and Cooking: Re-creating the Trimble Kitchen." The program will be held in the Langmuir Education Room on the first floor of the barn. The admission fee is for the lecture only.

The program will share the research and archaeology that uncovered historical evidence in a 1739 kitchen at Newlin Grist Mill in Glen Mills. Attendees will learn how the space was restored as an experimental kitchen, and they will find out about some of the tradespeople and craftspeople who reconstructed furnishings to make the kitchen functional. The program is a study of a kitchen from the architectural, archaeological, documentary, and cook's perspectives.

Shahan has more than 38 years in the museum field. He has a passion for historic food and beverage, and he offers historic drink classes and curated tastings. In addition, he has restored and reconstructed mills, water systems, and kitchens. He combines his love of historic trades with experimental archaeology and has led projects in brick making, manufacturing potash, and rebuilding a water wheel using only 18th-century tools and techniques. He is experienced with hearth cooking, wood-fired bake ovens, brewing, and distilling. He has worked in an 1806 brewery, a reconstructed 1850 brewery, and George Washington's Distillery and Gristmill at Mount Vernon.

In addition, Sam Leamer will present a living history program, "Coffee With a Colonial," in the kitchen of the General Edward Hand Mansion on Sunday, Aug. 2, at 2, 3, and 4 p.m. The program will also be offered on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 2, 3, and 4 p.m. The program will feature coffee and discussion.

Leamer was born and raised in Berks County. He holds a history degree from Cairn University and is a lifelong living historian and re-enactor with a decade of experience working with 21st-century coffee. Leamer wishes to provide a deeper understanding of the Colonial coffee culture in North America and how it fueled a nation's beginnings.
