Camps to Focus on Animals, Trades

Chester County 4-H will offer two half-day summer camps from Monday to Friday, June 22 to 26, at the Russellville Grange Hall, 245 Old Limestone Road, Oxford. The camps are designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and introduce real-world experiences.

During the Exploring Companion and Household Pets camp, which will take place from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., participants will engage directly with animals, such as reptiles, fish, guinea pigs, rabbits, and more, while learning proper care, handling, feeding, and habitat setup. Through guided, hands-on stations, youths will practice enclosure cleaning, diet preparation, and recognizing animal health and behavior. They will also present pet care routines and interpret animal body language. Camp activities will include creative projects, basic health checks, grooming introductions, and discussions on responsible pet ownership.

The Discover the Trade Secrets camp, taking place from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., will introduce youths to real-world vocational skills. Participants will rotate through sessions in electrical work, plumbing, woodworking, and leathercraft, guided by experienced instructors. Youths will learn practical, age-appropriate skills, such as wiring a simple lamp, making basic pipe or hose repairs, cutting and finishing a wooden project, and creating a custom leather item.

Participants may register for one camp or both. Each camp has a fee, with an additional 4-H enrollment fee for those who are not already members of 4-H. Registration is required by Wednesday, June 17, at https://4h.zsuite.org/event-registrations/49565.
