Unearth Summer Fun at the Library

If you participate in the Summer Reading Program at the Milanof-Schock Library, be prepared for adventure.

This year's program, which runs through Saturday, Aug. 15, features the theme "Unearth a Story," and the library will host a plethora of activities for people of all ages.

"We're doing a dinosaur escape room, so that's going to be really fun," said Katelyn Schwab, who coordinates Summer Reading with Alyssa Mackey and Laura Bear. "It's going to be on a Friday when the library is completely closed, so we'll have access to the entire library. People will go on a scavenger hunt to find dino eggs."

At a dinosaur story time, kids can sing songs and listen to dinosaur books being read aloud before cracking open their own dinosaur eggs and taking home a new "pet."

Many of the programs also combine science or other disciplines with reading.

"Our Storybook Science will be based off of different fairy tales," Mackey said. "The first one will be based on 'Princess and the Pea,' and they'll test different materials to see if they can feel a pompom through them. It's a lot of sensory science where we'll read the book together, and they'll get a certificate at the end saying they're a scientist."

Schwab, Mackey and Bear are taking over the Summer Reading Program for the first time, filling a role previously held for many years by Jan Betty.

When choosing programs for the summer, they selected a variety that will appeal to various ages and interests.

"We found things that we think would be fun to do, because if you're excited and passionate about what you're leading, it makes it more exciting for the people who are participating," Schwab said.

Other Summer Reading activities include meeting Blaze the Show Dog, a visit from the Wolf Sanctuary of PA, chalk drawing sessions and baby and toddler races.

The popular "So You Want to Be A ..." program will bring in a voice actor, a railroad conductor and more. The Summer Reading organizers emphasized that attendees don't have to actually want to pursue a particular career to get enjoyment out of attending a program in the series, which brings in guests who provide entertaining activities.

"I think a lot of people think of the library and of course they think of books, but the library isn't just books," Mackey said. "There's so many other things you can do here. We have a field day program, the escape room. You can (have) fun here even if reading a book isn't your thing."

Along with the Summer Reading Program, the library will host an adult Bookopoly program during the summer and will organize its first Readathon. For that initiative, kids can collect prizes for reading and raise money for the library by garnering sponsorship from family and friends in the form of donations to the library.

"Come out for Summer Reading because it's a great way to meet other families and build friendships. And also, it's free," Schwab said. "It's fun to come in, have something to do with your kids for no cost, and of course, you can pick up some books while you're here, too. Reading is really great for children's formative years to help them learn and grow."

Most programs require preregistration, and online registration is encouraged. For a complete list of Summer Reading Program activities, visit https://mslibrary.org.
