Two Salisbury Elementary Students Honored by State Senator

On June 1, two Salisbury Elementary students were presented with Good Citizenship Awards from state Sen. Scott Martin, who serves southern Lancaster County and parts of Berks County.

Salisbury students Rainee Mast and Zoey Zimmerman were both honored, having been selected and voted on by their peers and teachers.

Martin did not personally attend the event, but he sent a representative from his office to present the awards. Steven Howe, constituent services representative in Martin's office, attended the assembly. Howe is also involved with Pequea Valley's football program.

"These outstanding students have consistently demonstrated strong character, leadership and a commitment to making a positive difference in their communities," Martin said in a prerecorded video message. "Being a good citizen means working hard in school, stepping forward when others need help, serving your community, showing kindness, dependability and respect in everyday actions."

The "Good Citizenship" program has presented awards to 60 schools across 33 different school districts within Martin's constituency.

"Each of our honorees show these qualities through the choices they make and the example they set for those around them," Martin said. "I feel strongly that it's important that we take time to recognize young people who are doing great things."

One student was selected in fourth and fifth grade. Rainee was the fourth-grade selection; Zoey received the fifth-grade nod.

"(Rainee) constantly demonstrates respect for others and takes pride in their role as a member of the school community," Howe said. "By following the school's expectations every day, (Rainee sets) a positive example for peers. In addition, (Rainee is) a kind and supportive friend.

"(Zoey) is a deserving recipient of the citizenship award because of their positive attitude, responsibility, and strong contributions to the school community," Howe went on. "In the classroom, (Zoey) comes prepared to learn, stays focused, and works diligently to complete (her) assignments to the best of (her) ability."

Howe noted Zoey's involvement in Girvin's Gardeners as making her particularly qualified for the award. Founded by fifth-grade Salisbury teacher Anita Girvin, the club's students give up their lunch break every other Wednesday to help maintain the garden in front of the school.

"(Girvin's Gardeners) are making the school a more welcome place for everyone," Howe said.
