Gretna Music Posts Concerts and More

Gretna Music's summer season will continue with a variety of events. Unless otherwise noted, the events will take place at the Mount Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna.

Among the activities will be mainstage performances, which require tickets. To purchase tickets, visit http://www.gretnamusic.org.

The mainstage performances will be preceded by First Listen events, which are 20-minute mini concerts showcasing young local musicians. Admission is free.

A kids' sing-along with Mr. Music will take place on Monday, July 13, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Hall of Philosophy, 212 Gettysburg Ave., Mount Gretna. Kids will also have the opportunity to explore various musical instruments after the event. Admission is free.

A First Listen concert featuring the Luca Savarino Quartet will be held on Friday, July 17, at 6:30 p.m. In addition to Luca Savarino on saxophone, the quartet includes Sam Hale on piano, Joseph LaMarca on bass, and Justin Bowden on drums.

New Jazz Underground will give a mainstage performance on July 17 at 7:30 p.m. Consisting of Abdias Armenteros, saxophonist and composer; Sebastian Rios, bassist and composer; and TJ Reddick, drummer, the group strives to redefine jazz, blending its rich traditions with modern hip-hop, pop, and Afro-Latino rhythms. Fabiola Mendez will perform on the mainstage on Saturday, July 18, at 7:30 p.m. Mendez, a Puerto Rican cuatrista, singer, and Emmy-nominated composer, explores culture and identity through her music. She is the first Berklee College of Music graduate whose principal instrument is the cuatro, a four-stringed Latin-American instrument. Sharing Puerto Rican folk traditions and storytelling, Mendez will perform alongside her band, featuring drums, percussion, and electric bass. A free meet-and-greet with Mendez will be held earlier in the day, from 1 to 2 p.m., at WEPA, 9 S. Ninth St., Lebanon.

Reece Knepper, a 15-year-old pianist from York, will be featured in a First Listen performance on Sunday, July 19, from 2:15 p.m. Reece started piano lessons at the age of 5, and he currently studies with Gretchen Dekker and Eric Fung.

Following this First Listen program, the Manhattan Chamber Players will give a mainstage concert at 3 p.m. The collective of New York-based musicians share the aim of performing the greatest works in the chamber repertoire at the highest level. The concert will include Ernest Chausson's Concerto for Violin, Piano, and String Quartet, Op. 21 and Felix Mendelssohn's String Octet in E-flat major, Op. 20.

The Cardinal Quartet will give a First Listen concert on Sunday, July 26, at 6:45 p.m. The quartet consists of violinists Harrison Mabon and Taisei Berg, violist Jacob Iwanowicz, and cellist Tracey Rodriguez. They range from a sophomore in high school to college students.

The Curtis on Tour program will come to Gretna for a mainstage performance on July 26 at 7:30 p.m. Embracing the Curtis Institute's "learn by doing" philosophy, Curtis on Tour ensembles are a mix of emerging artists and Curtis alumni. At Gretna, violinist Elissa Lee Koljonen, guitarist Hao Yang, and cellist Romain-Olivier Gray will perform works by Paganini and Piazzolla, as well as American composers such as Curtis alumnus George Rochberg.

"Happy Birthday, Mon Ami!" - a puppet show for children - will be presented on Monday, July 27, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Hall of Philosophy. In the puppet show, class, cultures, and expectations clash when Jacques' American cousin Sam visits him in Paris for a birthday celebration. The show combines glove puppetry, live music, and audience participation, and it won a 2024 Jim Henson Foundation grant award. Admission is free.

Gretna Music offers an array of ticketing options. The Gretna Grooves package is for the three jazz concerts - New Jazz Underground, Michael Mayo, and Mathis Picard Trio - and the Club Classical package is for six chamber music performances. Gretna Music also offers discounted tickets for youths under 18 and the adults who bring them, half-price admission for those ages 19 to 30, a 10% discount for active and retired members of the military, and a pay-what-you-will option at the door based on availability.
