Life is short. Eat dessert.

That's the lighthearted message shared by Sheila Moore, a member of Lampeter United Methodist Church's Fellowship and Evangelism Committee.

Community members will have the chance to do just that during the Second Friday event on Aug. 14 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the church, 1101 Village Road, Lancaster.

The theme is "the Farm" and will feature Stoltzfus Homestead Farm Fun with a petting zoo composed of goats, chickens, a baby cow, turkeys, rabbits, and a turtle.

"While they're geared to folks of all ages, some of our events are more targeted towards the young folks and some are more targeted towards the more experienced folks," said Moore. "This is an activity people have asked about, an opportunity for kids to be hands-on with animals in a safe, secure environment. That's why we decided to give that a try this summer. We're hoping we have a lot of kids come out with their friends. ... This would be a great way to keep the kids off their electronics for a little bit and come out and have some fun."

There will be cookies; an ice cream float bar; and a sundae bar with toppings such as whipped cream, cherries, and M&M's available. "We will also, of course, be eating desserts for dinner because life's short, eat desserts first," Moore said. "It's an opportunity for things that you don't usually typically get to do at home, eat ice cream sundaes for dessert or for dinner."

On Friday, Sept. 11, there will be a performance by 'Midst the Noise, a local five-piece semi-acoustic local band that plays a variety of tunes, from Motown to current pop and rock.

Hamburgers and hot dogs will highlight the menu, with cookies, cakes, and brownies for dessert.

There will be a patriotic theme with the event coming on the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the United States.

Lampeter UMC holds free Second Friday get-togethers throughout the year. "I think our Second Friday events provide an opportunity for folks of all ages to come out and have some free fun, with delicious food and fun activities for all ages," Moore said.

Second Fridays typically attract between 30 and 100 visitors. "It's a small enough crowd that you can meet new friends, but a large enough crowd that you can feed off the excitement as well," said Moore.
