Annual Yard Sale Set in Gap

A communitywide yard sale will be held in Gap from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 15.

The sale will be held on Pequea Avenue; on Newport Avenue; on Bellevue Avenue; at Sunset Village; and at the Gap Fire Hall, 802 Pequea Ave., Gap.

Communitywide yard sales, organized by Jim Shaffer, were held annually in Gap for roughly 30 years. The effort was brought back last year on a smaller scale.

"It is really just trying to revitalize the yard sales in Gap," local resident Paula Diem said. "It always ran with Rough and Tumble week, so it used to be a three-day yard sale on Thursday, Friday and Saturday."

Last year, the community tried the sale for just two days. Roughly 20 to 25 homes participated, although Diem would love to see it go back to the 50-plus homes that took part in the sale's glory days.

Diem said that last year, most of the homes that participated had items that would typically be found at a yard sale, including old toys, books and kitchenware.

"There's new faces, new families in Gap," Diem said. "So lots of new things that they can clean out and get rid of."

Those outside of Gap who would like to participate in the sale are welcome to set up at the Gap Fire Hall, Diem said.

"It is a nice community thing that everybody gets so involved," she said. "We just really want to get it back out there so that people know that we're having it."
