Deborah Stambaugh, Central Pennsylvania coordinator, talked about the organization and its participation in Give Local York, a countywide day of fundraising set for May 1:

What is the mission of PA Polio Survivor's Network?

Our mission is to be in service providing information to all polio survivors, post-polio support groups, and caregivers. In addition and equally important, we draw attention to the importance of being immunized against this and other crippling childhood diseases.

Why is the organization excited to participate in Give Local York this year?

We are excited about the opportunity Give Local York is providing to increase our exposure so that we can reach more polio survivors and provide them with information that can help them thrive as they experience the debilitating consequences of the late effects of polio. The vast majority of polio survivors are members of the aging population. Sadly, many are not comfortable with or able to afford computers. This opportunity to raise funds will allow us to reach these survivors and their caregivers, thus enabling us to provide them credible guidance and support through phone and U.S. mail.

Of equal significance, we will be drawing attention to the importance of being immunized against crippling childhood diseases. We are working with local Rotary Clubs to raise the funds to distribute vaccine information cards to all new parents in York and the surrounding counties. The vaccine information card information is easily available on our website at http://www.papolionetwork.org/vaccines.html.
