Parks Department Slates Activities

Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee for the programs, and activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. Weekend Laboratory: Predator-Prey Adaptations, for youths ages 12 to 17, will be offered on Sunday, Jan. 17, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Lancaster County Central Park's pavilion 22, 1101 Kiwanis Drive, Lancaster. Participants will learn about predators and prey and how they have adapted alongside each other. Adults must sign release forms as they drop off students for the program.

Homeschool Wednesday: Winter ID of Deciduous Trees will be available on Wednesday, Jan. 20, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Children ages 8 to 12 are invited to learn about subtle tree features such as tree shape, bark, twigs, and fruits that can help with identification. Attendees should be prepared for outdoor activities. Children under age 8 are welcome if accompanying older siblings, and they must be registered.

Thursday in the Park: Where Is Dinner? has been set for Thursday, Jan. 21, from 1 to 2 p.m. and from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Children ages 6 to 9 are invited to learn what local mammals eat in wintertime. Participants will take a walk and look for evidence of mammals feeding on trees, nuts, seeds, and fruits. Attendees should be prepared for outdoor activities. Children under age 6 are welcome if accompanying older siblings, and they must be registered.

A Cabin Fever Hike for people of all ages will be held on Saturday, Jan. 23, from 10 to 11 a.m. from 2 to 3 p.m. Participants will explore the winter woods, and they may bring their own hot beverages to enjoy along the trails.

People of all ages may participate in a Scrape the Spotted Lanternfly Egg Mass Hike on Sunday, Jan. 24, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Speedwell Forge County Park. While hiking, participants will look for and destroy overwintering spotted lanternfly egg masses. The group will meet at the parking lot located at 480 Speedwell Forge Road, Lititz. There is no fee for this program.

Munchkin Science: Winter Birds will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 26, from 10 to 11 a.m. The program is geared for children ages 3 to 5, but siblings are welcome. Attendees will go on a bird walk and keep track of how many different birds they see and hear. Children will also have opportunities to try using binoculars and to make a treat they may take home and give to the birds.
