"Drop Your Drawers" At The Library

The oldest-known version of underwear might be the loincloth, but it is new briefs and boxers that Strasburg-Heisler Library and L-S Together are seeking during the second annual Drop Your Drawers event.

Packs of new underwear in children's and adults' sizes may be dropped off in the specially marked collection bin on the sidewalk outside the library, 143 Precision Ave., Strasburg, through the end of February. Alternatively, individuals may also visit http://www.strasburglibrary.org and follow the links to the Amazon Wishlist, where they may purchase items that will be shipped directly to the library. In March, L-S Together will distribute the underwear to Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District schools and clothing banks.

Last year's Drop Your Drawers resulted in 1,295 pairs of underwear, nearly three times the goal of 500. L-S Together chair Jenice Weaver shared that undies were distributed through the nurses' offices in the schools. The nurses met daily needs - such as underwear soiled by accidents or from spilled drinks in the cafeteria - as well as long-term needs. They sent packs of underwear home with students who did not have well-fitting garments at home.

"One of the simplest, yet most essential, needs of kids is clean clothing, especially underwear that fits and is comfortable," Weaver explained. "When children have these essentials, they feel more comfortable and can focus on their schoolwork. We want all children at school to have a sense of dignity throughout the year."

L-S Together is in the process of launching a clothing bank, Weaver noted, adding that she hopes it will be open by late spring.
