School Announces Science Fair Winners

St. John Neumann Catholic School held its annual Science Fair in February, this year in a virtual format. All students in seventh and eighth grades conducted scientific experiments using the scientific method and presented their findings to local judges via Zoom presentations. The winners will compete in the North Museum Science and Engineering Fair to be held virtually during March.

Winners from St. John Neumann Catholic School are as follows.

In the Plant Science category, first place went to Maya Kirchner for "Does the Color of an LED Light Change the Growth of Microgreens?" and second place went to Evelyn Weis for "Light and Plants."

In Earth Science, winners were Emma Townsend, first place, "Erosion: How Batteries and Aluminum Affect Our Earth Through Erosion"; Madeline Keyes, second place, "Wet Rocks?"; and Ryleigh Brewer, third place, "Thermal Pollution: The Effect of Rising Temperatures in Natural Waters."

The Engineering Science winners were Hans Richter, first, "How Far Does a Magnetic Field Travel?" and Jack Kelly, second, "Potato Power!"

In Consumer Science, Molly Roark placed first for "Squeaky Clean: Do Cleaners Really Clean 99.9% of Bacteria?"; Kelsie McCuen placed second for "Mask Up: Testing the Effectiveness of Homemade Mask Fabrics"; and Johnny Martin placed third with "Fold, Lift Fly."

Kenny Box won first place in the Life Science category with "Spotted Lanternflies: Unwelcome Guests," and Alisha Klingler took second for "The Human Superpower!"

In Physical Science, the winners were Maya Lamichane, first, "Effects of Various Drinks on Teeth"; Ava Thurmond, second, "Out of Ingredients"; Cristian Evans, third, "Can Video Games be a New Form of Exercising?"; and George Weis, fourth, "Mental Games."
