BASEBALL

Despite returning just one starter (Hunter Sipel), head coach Stuart Streeter has high expectations for this season. "We all have high expectations but there are huge challenges to deal with as well," Streeter said. "Missing players due to quarantines are situations that change the makeup of our team at any time or on the spur of the moment."

The Comets got off to a rough start Monday, March 29, managing just one hit, a single by Isaac Braegelmann in the sixth inning, in a 7-0 loss to Wilson. Manor struck out 15 times and committed four errors.

In the Section One opener Wednesday, March 31, Hempfield extended a 3-1 lead with two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth for a 9-1 victory over the Comets. Manor finished with just two hits on the day, singles by Ethan Adelman and Jackson Swarr.

TRACK

The Lady Comet throwers swept the javelin, shot put and discus, anchoring a tight 78-71 season opening win over visiting Hempfield Monday, March 29. Manor won 11 of 18 events with Annie Bibus winning the mile and 800 and Jalyn Clow sparking the throwers with firsts in the javelin and discus and a second in the shot. Gertrude Moenga added a win in the shot with Jaden Metzler, who was second in the discus, taking third. Alyssa Heagy and Cassidy McCollum, who won the long jump, went 2-3 in the javelin while Kelsey Busswell's third in the discus rounded out the throwing sweep.

Other winners included Abby Stoner in the 200, Abby Ames in the 3200, and Eden Crisman in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet on a very windy day.

"The throwers certainly came up big," pointed out head coach Ben Shober. "And Cassidy winning the long jump was also key. It was a tough meet and every point mattered in the end."

Kyle Murr, a returning district qualifier as a sophomore, won the long and triple jumps and Aaron Eby took the javelin and discus but it wasn't quite enough as Hempfield pulled out a tightly contested 79-65 win.

Graham Thomas was a spark on the track, winning the 3200, anchoring the winning 4x800 relay with Hetrick, Lindsley and Leo Medvedkin (first in the 800) and teaming with Lindsley, Hetrick and Ritchey in the 4x400 exchange.

Bella Peters and Kylie Goss combined for 13 strikeouts and scatters three hits.

In the league opener Wednesday, Emily Riggs cracked a solo homer in the fifth inning, breaking a 5-5 tie and providing the game-winning run.

"Defensively, Aralyn Hoffert came in with no outs and a runner on first and got the last three outs of the game," said head coach Dave Stokes. "This was her first varsity experience. She did a great job in a difficult situation."

The Comets opened with a four-run first inning and led 5-1 after three but the Knights returned the favor with a four-run fourth, setting the stage for Riggs and Hoffert.

"We return almost everyone from 2019 and have four freshmen (Jordan Bailey, Janelle Bowmaster, Kira Greene and Reagan Soboleski) that I can mix in," said Stokes. "In the past, they would be starting for us and would probably start on a number of teams in the league. We have high expectations this year."

VOLLEYBALL

In their first match of the season, the Comets opened with a 25-19 win over visiting CV but fell short after that, dropping three close games, 25-22, 25-21, 25-19.
