L-S High School To Grace The Stage With "Godspell"

"You'll never see the same 'Godspell' twice," said Kevin Ditzler, Lampeter-Strasburg High School (LSHS) musical director.

"Godspell" revolves around a troupe of traveling performers figuring out how they can build a community. To think through the process, the troupe re-enacts several biblical parables but with a modern twist. At first, the musical seems light and funny, but the tone grows more serious as the group discovers the sacrifices that must be made to not only create but also maintain faith, love, and community.

"We built hand sanitizer breaks into the show because the troupe is trying to figure out how parables are applicable to modern times," explained Ditzler. "We also used face shields, thanks to the flexibility of this musical."

"Godspell" will be Ditzler's 11th production with LSHS. "It's been a real pleasure working with the kids over the years," said Ditzler. "I've also had great production teams made up of teachers within the district."

The cast will consist of an eclectic mix of personalities with differing musical and comedy styles. Senior Rowan Krantz will play Jesus, junior Weston Weaver will play John the Baptist and Judas, senior Hannah Miller will play Hannah (a featured soloist), and senior Samantha "Samy" Monroy will play Samy.

Some of the cast members talked about their experiences.

Monroy shared that the small cast size allowed the students to build strong connections. "When it came to doing the difficult scenes that are depressing, there was no hesitation from any of us," she said. "We all just gave our absolute most when it came to being emotional during the performances. It's been the most incredible and transformative experience I've had in high school because we were so close to the heart of what this show is about."

"We also had an incredible pit orchestra this year," noted Miller. "They had no conductor, but they brought everything together because they're super talented."

"Our cast became a family," added Weaver. "It was awesome to bring off-stage friendships to the stage. My favorite moments were with my cast member Pearce Flory; we even have our own handshake."

"I'm most excited for the audience to see the connectivity and vibrance of the cast even in such an isolating time," said Krantz. "I hope our bond is visible and can inspire others to love a little unconditionally."

The cast gives special thanks to Ethan Moore, who not only managed the sound and lights, but also took on the task of filming the production over five performances.
