During the first week of May, the Hempfield recCenter, 950 Church St., Landisville, will host two thriathlons: one catered to children and the other to adults.

On Saturday, May 1, the rec center will host its annual Youth TRI for Fun event from 5 to 6:30 p.m. This will be a noncompetitive event for children ages 7 to 12, divided into three age groups. Participants will need a swimsuit, a towel, a bike, a helmet, and running shoes. Each child will receive a medal, T-shirt, and goodie bag. Proceeds from this event go to the Everyone Belongs financial assistance campaign, which provides wellness opportunities for those who cannot otherwise afford them. Children ages 7 and 8 will swim 50 meters, bike six laps, and run one-quarter mile; children ages 9 and 10 will swim 50 meters, bike eight laps, and run one-half mile; and youths ages 11 and 12 will swim 100 meters, bike 10 laps, and run one-half mile.

On Sunday, May 2, the rec center will host its annual TRI for Life from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Competitors will swim 300 meters in the indoor pool, bike 16 miles over rolling hills, and run 3 miles on a relatively flat course. Cash awards will be given to the top male and female participants. Awards will be provided for the top three finishers in each age group and for the top three relay finishers. Participants must estimate their swim time as accurately as possible because no changes will be made after registration is submitted. Proceeds from the triathlon benefit the Everyone Belongs campaign.

"The organizers of the TRI and the numerous volunteers always look forward to seeing the excitement in the eyes of the athletes, both young and old, as well as the comradery that goes along with it," said Jamie McGlaughlin, director of fitness and wellness at the Hempfield recCenter. "It's great to see the athletes encouraging and congratulating one another."

These two events will be held rain or shine, but the race director will determine if the weather is severe enough on race day for delays or cancellation. Registration, which closes Sunday, April 18, is required to participate in either event.
