May Day Court Announced

Columbia High School's May Day court has been announced. This year's queen candidates are Anonya Bland, Amelia Campbell, Cassidy Cook, Jada Dyson, Cleo Grove, Emma Grove, Madison Hedgepeth, Daniela Moreta and Breanna Murphy. The male members of the May Court are Aiden Gladfelter, Dave Graham, Blake Helton, David Hershey, Ryan Hinkle, Carter Houck, Tanner Ness, Artie Poindexter and Michael Poole.

The 76th annual May Day event will be held in the high school's gym on Saturday, May 1, at 7 p.m. Due to COVID, tickets are limited and no outside spectators will be allowed.

May Day celebrates the coming of the spring and usually brings together the community, students, and parents. Each year, a junior and sophomore together work with a committee of community members to plan the event.

Seniors are chosen by their peers to participate in the May Day court, and the girls choose a male senior to escort them. Students of the senior class vote on a May Queen, with the winner announced at the May Day celebration. After the announcement, the May Court pairs participate in a waltz. Students from Columbia School District are invited to dance in a traditional Maypole dance, engaging students of all ages in the tradition.

Each year, the event committee chooses entertainment for the celebration. This year, students from Columbia High School's "Aladdin" will be singing, and a baton performance will be presented. In a typical year, the event also includes an elementary school dance group.
