SFMS To Host Storyteller, Coffeehouse

The Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS) will present a virtual tall tales workshop led by master storyteller Andy Offutt Irwin on Wednesday, May 12, from 7 to 8 p.m. The workshop, "Arcing to the Ridiculous," is intended for any aspiring adult storyteller who may wish to enter the Susquehanna Folk Festival Liars Contest this summer. The workshop is free of charge and is part of the summerlong Susquehanna Folk Festival. Attendees must preregister.

During the workshop, Irwin will share some of his tricks for creating comical tall tales - fanciful or greatly exaggerated stories. He will also demonstrate the four points of the narrative arc and explain how to make a story veer toward the ridiculous.

Irwin is a sought-after performing storyteller. He is especially known for relating the adventures of his 85-year-old, widowed, physician aunt, Marguerite Van Camp.

The Susquehanna Folk Festival Liars Contest will be livestreamed on Wednesday, July 14, at 7 p.m. The event will feature nine storytellers performing their best tall tale. A panel of judges will decide the top three winners, and cash prizes will be awarded. Any storyteller wishing to enter this contest must fill out an application due by June 14.
