Derry Township Launches New System For Alerts

Derry Township has launched Nixle to implement a new community notification system to provide real-time alerts about localized emergency situations and relevant community advisories. The new system replaces the old Code Red alert system.

All residents are encouraged to sign up for Nixle as soon as possible. If people currently receive emergency notifications from Derry Township via Code Red, they will still need to sign up for the new system.

Residents may choose one of three ways to register. They may text their ZIP code to 888777 from their mobile phone, visit http://www.derrytownship.org and sign up via the Nixle link, or visit http://www.nixle.com.

Once registered, residents will receive a confirmation text on their mobile device. Residents may also customize their alert settings by going to http://www.nixle.com and creating a user profile. Individuals may also add the Nixle app to their phone to receive notifications.

The new emergency notification system will allow important messages to be sent to residents via text, email, and home phone depending on the urgency of the message and how residents wish to be notified. It also allows customized messages to be sent based on geography, so notifications can be targeted.

Nixle messages are also connected to Derry Township's Facebook and Twitter pages to help expand the communications efforts. Nixle is also used in communities near Derry Township, including Middletown, Susquehanna Township, and South Londonderry Township.

For details or assistance registering with Nixle, call the Derry Township Police Department at 717-534-2202.
