Chess Team Wins Championship

Centerville Middle School (CMS) Chess Team won the Friendship Chess League championship on May 12 against Lancaster Country Day School (LCDS) by a score of 25.5 to 20.5. In addition, Samuel Keener, an eighth-grader at CMS, won a trophy as the top individual player in the league.

In January, the 10 top players from the school tournament in seventh and eighth grades competed against six local middle and elementary schools in a virtual tournament through ChessKids. At the end of the season in March, CMS and LCDS had the two best records and competed in the virtual championship match on May 12.

Members of the CMS Chess Team include seventh-graders Patrick Christoffel, Kara Mendenhall, Benjamin Striggle, and Andrew Xie and eighth-graders Ty Funk, Carter Guengerich, Samuel Keener, Adam Mast, Benjamin Ni, and Allan Verkhov.
