Students Display Art, Meet Buddies

Nye Elementary School students recently took part in a creative activity as well as literacy and social activities with high-schoolers.

Since schools were unable to hold their traditional art shows due to COVID-19 restrictions, Nye art teacher Christine Atkinson planned an abstract art installation on the school grounds. All Nye students in kindergarten through fifth grade contributed to the installation, which was unveiled on May 18.

During the spring months, high school students from Michelle McGinnis' Child Development classes partnered with Maria Shaffer's second-grade class and Michelle Kullman's fourth-grade class at Nye Elementary School. After learning how important literacy development is, the high school students planned reading activities for the Nye students to complete with them via Zoom.

On May 14, the high school and elementary students gathered at Schaffner Park to meet their Zoom buddies in person for fun on the playground as well as yard games and kickball.
