Stories For Summer: Library Directors Share Recommendations

Summer is the perfect time for reading, whether it be at the beach, by the pool or at home on the front porch. Two local library directors - Robbyn Kehoe from the Atglen Public Library and Trish Vandenbosch from the Moores Memorial Library in Christiana - shared what books patrons are asking for and what books they recommend for summer reading.

Community Courier: What books or authors make for good summer reading?

Kehoe: For adults, my first recommendation would be Riley Sager's "Survive the Night." Goodreads ranks Riley Sager's "Survive the Night" among the top 10 most anticipated beach reads of the summer. The "Pigeon" series (by Mo Willems) are great read-alouds, and the "Elephant and Piggie" books (by Williems) are perfect for beginning readers. For children, fans of Harry Potter might enjoy Jessica Townsend's "Morrigan Crow" fantasy series, starting with "The Trials of Morrigan Crow." For teens, three tried-and-true series are going out a lot now as the authors have added one to the series: Anthony Horowitz's "Alex Rider," John Flanagan's "Ranger's Apprentice" and Ransom Riggs' "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children."

Community Courier: What books are patrons requesting?

Vandenbosch: A couple of the books that patrons have asked for are "Downeast" by Gigi Georges and "The Last Thing He Told Me" by Laura Dave.

Kehoe: Kristin Hannah's "The Four Winds" and Matt Haig's "The Midnight Library" are very popular, but that also means there are long holds queues on them. Colleen Coble is also very popular. Any Mo Willems book is popular with young readers.

Community Courier: What book can you read again and again?

Vandenbosch: I reread any of Jane Austen's books.

Community Courier: Do you prefer audiobooks, e-books or actual books?

Vandenbosch: I prefer to hold a book, but every once in a while I will download an e-book from Overdrive. Overdrive is where Lancaster County library patrons go to get books and audiobooks. The free app is available at your app store.

Kehoe: We all prefer to read books, but e-materials have a special place during a pandemic, when you're traveling, when you need a new book in the middle of the night when you can't sleep, if you need to enlarge the font and if you like to fall asleep to a book, as the device will turn itself off. We don't judge; all reading is good.
