Bishop Shanahan Celebrates The Class Of 2021

Bishop Shanahan High School (BSHS) held its commencement exercises on June 11 in the BSHS auditorium, paying tribute to the Class of 2021.

This year's graduating class included 258 students, all of whom were accepted to four-year colleges, including the University of Notre Dame, Drexel University, Rochester Institute of Technology and Old Dominion University. The class also received more than $41 million in total college scholarships, including 30 full-tuition scholarships and 92 presidential scholarships. Sister Maureen Lawrence McDermott, IHM, Ph.D., the chief academic officer and superintendent of secondary schools, presided over the graduation ceremony.

John C. Porter, who will attend the University of South Carolina, was the valedictorian. Cara Wankmiller, who will attend the University of Notre Dame, was the salutatorian. During his speech, Porter encouraged his classmates: "You have shown resilience and determination in maintaining a sense of fraternity and fellowship this year. You have made your mark in these halls, and I cannot wait to see what you accomplish in the future."

Also at the commencement exercises, the Shanahan Medal was presented to Bishop Shanahan High School faculty, staff and administration. This medal is awarded annually to a person or group of persons whose service, commitment and dedication to Catholic education deserve recognition and gratitude.
