Stories For Summer: Library Directors Share Recommendations

Summer is the perfect time for reading, whether it be at the beach, by the pool or at home on the front porch. Two local library directors - Maria Long from the Village Library of Morgantown and Jennifer Spade from the Honey Brook Community Library - shared what books patrons are asking for and what books they recommend for summer reading.

Community Courier: What books or authors make for good summer reading?

Long: Authors that many enjoy especially in the summer are Elin Hilderbrand, Kristin Hannah and Nancy Thayer.

Spade: My book picks for summer reads are anything by Mary Kay Andrews, Elin Hilderbrand and Robyn Carr. They are a few of my favorite authors.

Community Courier: What books are patrons requesting?

Long: "The Midnight Library" by Matt Haig, "The Lost Apothecary" by Sarah Penner, "The Plot" by Jean Hanff Korelitz and "Sooley" by John Grisham.

Spade: "Four Winds" by Kristin Hannah, "The Newcomer" by Mary Kay Andrews and books by favorite authors like David Baldacci, James Patterson and Lee Child.

Community Courier: What book can you read again and again?

Spade: "Small Town Girl" by LaVyrle Spencer. It's my favorite!

Long: When it comes to books, I am one who savors a book and rarely returns for a second read unless, of course, I am leading a book discussion or story time, etc. However, I have reread "A Wrinkle in Time" a few times, and I must say, I enjoyed it even more in my most recent read. I am not heavily into sci-fi, but this book really sticks with me. I can see where "Doctor Who" got its influence; I like the recent reboot of the (television) show.

Community Courier: Do you prefer audiobooks, e-books or actual books?

Spade: I prefer to read an actual book. I always have a big stack of library books at home to read.

Long: I still favor books over electronic print. However, I love audiobooks and I have been relaxing in the evening listening to stories, particularly music biographies. Next to books, music is my passion. I sometimes will have the audiobook on while following along with the print copy. I am a very audio/visual person.

Both the Village Library, 207 N. Walnut St, Morgantown, and the Honey Brook Community Library, 987 Compass Road, Honey Brook, are offering Summer Reading Programs with reading incentives for patrons of all ages.
