Cross-Country Holds Scholarship Event, Alumni Run, Scrimmage

The Solanco cross-country teams kicked off the 2021-22 season on Aug. 28 with a home scrimmage against Octorara. The scrimmage coincided with the Solanco Cross Country and Track Alumni Association's eighth annual Coach Lee Rhodes and Coach Art Harrington Scholarship event.

"We try to get the current team, coaches, alumni, and families together to kick off the new season and to promote our efforts to generate scholarship funds for the upcoming school year," said former Solanco head coach Craig Ausel.

This year's event was attended by over 100 people, raised just under $1,000, and featured Solanco's varsity scrimmage, an alumni race, and an alumni, team, and family picnic. "It's a great way to connect the proud tradition of the past with the current program," Ausel said.

The scrimmage against Octorara was not scored, but first-year head coach and former Solanco standout Andrew Musselman commented that the boys technically would have won while the girls, with just four runners, were forced to forfeit.

Alumni, family, and friends of Solanco cross-country and track who were unable to attend but wish to support the scholarship fund efforts can visit http://www.solancoxc.org and click on Alumni Association or email slcxcalumni@comcast.net. There are opportunities to sponsor a scholarship sign for the 2022 seasons; the signs are displayed at all home cross-country and track races. All proceeds go directly to the scholarships to be awarded in the spring of 2022.

"We currently award two scholarships (Coach Lee Rhodes XC Scholarship and Coach Art Harrington XC and Track Scholarship) with the goal of being able to award four," noted Ausel.

Solanco's only home meet this season is Tuesday, Oct. 12. Mark your calendars.
