On Aug. 28, Serrano's Barber Lounge, 127 E. Main St., New Holland, offered free back-to-school haircuts for children on a walk-in basis. The event was sponsored by FilterShine Northeast.

Serrano's owner Ramone "Rome" Serrano shared that the reason for holding the event was personal to him. When he and his brother were growing up, he said, they went without backpacks and haircuts; now, he wanted to do something to help children start the school year on a high note. "No kids in my community should go without," he said.

During the event, four barbers offered 60 free haircuts at Serrano's. Additionally, 96 hot dogs and 42 backpacks were given away.

Serrano's has been offering this event for several years but was unable to hold it in 2020 due to the shutdown. Rome plans to continue it every year.
