Parents Advised Of Vision Disorder Signs

Prevent Blindness has offered information to help parents recognize if their children may have a vision disorder. Without early detection and treatment, uncorrected vision disorders can interfere with learning and impair children's development.

Parents and educators are urged to be aware of symptoms of common eye disorders in children, which include rubbing the eyes often, closing or covering one eye to read or to see, titling the head or thrusting it forward, having difficulty reading or doing other close work, or holding objects close to the eyes to see them more clearly. Other indicators include blinking, squinting, or frowing often or complaining that things are blurry.

All children, especially those who are having issues with their eyes, should visit an eye professional annually to have their vision checked. In addition, Prevent Blindness and Children's Vision Massachusetts and School Health have created a new web resource to help parents assess their children's digital screen time use; tips are available at https://preventblindness.org/childrens-screen-time-tips/.
