Organ, Jazz Performances Set

Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey, will present two programs in its 2021-22 Arts Alive cultural series.

Attendees of an organ recital on Sunday, Oct. 10, at 4 p.m. in the sanctuary will have the first opportunity to hear the church's restored 1950 Aeolian-Skinner Opus 1132. The event will also be livestreamed at http://www.derrypres.org and on the church's YouTube and Facebook channels.

The organ, originally built for the Redeemer Church in New Haven, Conn., underwent more than a year of restoration before starting its new life at Derry Presbyterian. Grant Wareham, director of music ministry and organist, will present a program highlighting all the capabilities of the organ, including the 1929 E.M. Skinner harmonic flute tones - pipes that were not included in the instrument's original installation - on Louis Vierne's "Clair de Lune" and the organ used as a full orchestra in a transcription of Felix Mendelssohn's "Overture to Ruy Blas." The program will also include Maurice Durufle's "Prelude and Fugue on Alain," a tribute to his fallen friend, Jehan Alain; Max Reger's "Chorale Fantasy" on "How Brightly Shines the Morning Star"; and "Up to Eleven," a piece written specifically for this instrument by Derry's own Dr. Jamie Mosher.

Wareham holds a Bachelor of Music in organ performance from Rice University and a Master of Music in organ performance from the Yale Institute of Sacred Music and School of Music. Previously he served as organist and choirmaster at the Episcopal Church at Yale in New Haven, Conn. He has won several awards and was a finalist in the Longwood Gardens Organ Competition in 2019.

Bill Carter and the Presbybop Quartet will present a concert in the sanctuary at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 24. Under the musical leadership of jazz pianist Bill Carter, this ensemble from Clarks Summit includes bassist Tony Marino, drummer Ron Vincent, and saxophonist Al Hamme.

At both concerts, a freewill offering will be received. Face masks are required. Handicapped-accessible parking and an elevator are available.
