Bird Club Plans Activities

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. After a brief business meeting, LCBC member Warren Wolf will present "Thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail."

Attendees will follow along as Wolf hikes the trail. He is a Master Gardener and formerly was the director of the Master Gardener program in Lancaster County. He is also a Pennsylvania Master Naturalist and a member of the Muhlenberg Botanical Society as well as other groups.

Members of the public are invited to attend free of charge and may call 717-984-2738 or 717-725-2717 with questions.

Additionally, the club will offer two other events in October. These events are free and open to the public.

Bruce Carl will conduct the Big Sit on Saturday, Oct. 9, at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area (MCWMA) on the hill overlooking the visitors' center, starting before dawn and continuing into the evening. In the case of rain, the program will take place on Sunday, Oct. 10. The Big Sit is an annual, international, noncompetitive birding event. The public may stop by MCWMA at any time to visit or to assist Carl with identifying species seen and heard from his 17-foot circle.

The LCBC is using this event as a fundraiser for MCWMA and LCBC's youth scholarship program. Those who wish to help may pledge an amount for each species identified or contribute a flat amount to the event. For information on making a pledge or for other details, contact Carl at 717-368-4824 or hrdabrd@gmail.com.

Also on Oct. 9, Roger Stoner will lead a field trip for beginners and all other interested persons at the Chestnut Grove Natural Area in Manor Township. The walk will start at 9 a.m. and will last about two hours. Binoculars will be available to borrow. To register, call Roger at 717-393-9030 by 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8.
