Geologist To Speak At MAHS Meeting

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) will offer a slideshow titled "Geology and the Gettysburg Campaign" during its meeting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9, in Millersville's Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m. Anyone who has not been vaccinated against COVID-19 is asked to wear a mask.

Jeri Jones, a geologist, will examine how the rocks and landscapes of the Gettysburg area, including Devil's Den, Little Round Top and the CSX railroad cut, played a role in the way troops arrived at the battlefield, as well as how they helped decide the outcome of this battle, known as the largest on U.S. soil. The manner in which geology determined the final maneuver in Pickett's Charge and where dinosaur foot tracks can be located in the park also will be discussed prior to the closing question-and-answer session.

Jones has been involved with geology for approximately 41 years. He is a Messiah University faculty member, the owner of Jones Geological Services in Spring Grove, a consultant to several quarries, a guest columnist on earth science for a local newspaper and the author of five books and numerous articles related to geology. Additionally, he travels around the country conducting geologic field trips for people of all ages, and he established the Zoom Rock Room, a Tuesday evening online earth science discussion. Copies of his latest book, "Geologic Guide to the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail," will be available at the meeting.

Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. For more information, contact Phil Gerber at 717-872-8837 before 5 p.m. or at pge8507@aol.com.
