Lady Baron Booters Celebrate 300th Victory

The Manheim Central girls' soccer team took out its frustrations from a weekend loss with a 7-0 drubbing of Garden Spot on Sept. 27. The win was significant because it was the 300th victory in the program's history.

"It's a goal of our program to always honor those before us and inspire those after us," said Barons' coach Andrew Stoltzfus, who has been at the helm for 64 of those wins. "It has taken 30 years of dedicated players to get us to 300 wins. It was a nice reflection point on all the players that have had a hand in those wins over the years."

Hannah Adair registered two goals and an assist in the victory over the Spartans. Abbie Reed also notched two goals. Summer Bates, Mikayla Beck and Katie White found the back of the net for the Barons.

Stoltzfus said last Monday's win against Spot was a good chance for Manheim to get back on track after a tough 3-0 loss on Saturday. He said the win against the Spartans was a real team effort.

"Our offense was moving the ball well and took our opportunities," he said. "The defense defended as a unit, and when we got a lead and Garden Spot had to make some adjustments to try and get back in the game, our midfield really took control of the game."

The Barons defeated Donegal 4-0 on Sept. 23 with Adair and White each collecting two goals.

GOLF

The Lancaster-Lebanon League tournament was Sept. 27 at a windy Honeybrook Golf course. It was set up great, Manheim coach Connor Sheehan said. He noted that the course provided rewards for good shots and penalized golfers if they were struggling.

"My guys mostly struggled, but played hard," he said. "Ryan Snavely was our closest who was 11 shots above the cut with a 94, and he was battling his swing a little bit. Zach Benner had eight pars, but he had too many big numbers. Cayden Schwebel had his putting and short game going, though his long game was absent. The guys that were there saw some good play and know what they can do to improve.

"Overall, I am proud of how hard they and the rest of my team worked this season. Next year, as a coach, I know I need to focus on more individualized instruction. Hopefully, I can see my players throughout the off season to get them off the rocky path to being a league contender."

GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL

Last weekend Manheim hosted the 2021 Baron Classic. Friday night they had seven junior varsity teams from schools like Cedar Cliff, Conestoga Valley, Greencastle-Antrim, and Daniel Boone. The Manheim Central JV team lost in the finals to Conestoga Valley.

On Saturday, the Barons hosted nine varsity teams including Cedar Cliff, Conestoga Valley, Brandywine, Greencastle-Antrim, Governor Mifflin, Red Lion. Manheim Central won the tournament beating Cedar Cliff in the finals

Manheim Central girls coach Jason Moyer said there was a lot of competitive play throughout the day.

On Sept. 23, Central beat Garden Spot 3-0 on set scores of 25-11, 25-11 and 25-11. Grace Stoltzfus was a leader on the court with 15 assists and two aces. Emma Moyer added five kills and two aces. Rachel Nolt and Natalie Siegrist each had two blocks. Rachel Nissley had three assists.

FIELD HOCKEY

The Barons went on the road for a 3-2 overtime victory last week. Kiley Hosler and Ella Brubaker had goals during regulation and Kylie Kroesen got the game-winning goal with about six minutes remaining in OT. Monica Herman made a diving save on the goal line with the score tied 2-2.

The win keeps the Barons on task for their season objectives. Barons' coach Morgan Briggs said earlier this season that she believes her team will be in contention all year.

"This is a team that's going to be there in the end for a section (title) and play in the post season," said Briggs.

BOYS' SOCCER

Manheim led 2-1 in the second half against Oley Valley, but the Lynx scored three goals for a come-from-behind win. Gabe Redcay scored both goals. Peter Burkhart had an assist. Central had six shots and seven corners in the game.

At Northeastern, it was all Bobcats, resulting in a 4-0 verdict. Both losses came against two strong teams. The Barons are holding down the No. 9 seed in the District Three Class 3A with a 6-4 record.

GIRLS' TENNIS

The Lady Barons beat Cocalico 6-1 last Thursday, giving them 10-3 record. They are ranked tenth in the district and the top eight teams make districts.

FOOTBALL

The Barons improved their record to 5-0 after holding off Wilson 24-21, Friday, Sept. 24 at West Lawn.

After their first two possessions ended in interceptions and Manheim trailed 7-0, Brady Harbach caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Judd Novak. It was a 12-play, 74-yard drive.

Senior kicker Connor Caterbone nailed a 29-yard field to give the Barons a 10-7 lead. The Bulldogs took a 14-10 lead to the locker room at intermission. The Baron "D" clamped down in the second half.

Down 14-10, Owen Sensenig hauled-in a 39-yard pass from Novak and Rocco Daugherty pulled in a three-yard catch from Novak to put Central ahead 24-14. Wilson scored late to cut the Barons' lead to 24-21 and Central's defense held on.

Novak threw for 129 yards passing and added 57 yards rushing. Justin Heffernan rushed for 84 yards on 23 carries. Sensenig had two catches for 50 yards. Mason Weaver had three catches for 20 yards.
