Historical Society To Host "Miss Victory"

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will host Christine Lurk as a guest speaker at the organization's monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 18, at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy. Lurk, also known as Miss Victory, will discuss various aspects of the World War II home front. Her presentation will describe the duties of an air raid warden in the 1940s, how citizens prepared for a blackout drill and what people did when the air raid siren sounded.

Lurk was born in Baltimore and grew up in California, where she majored in criminology at the University of California. She then joined the military and served in the Military Police in the Army Security Agency in West Berlin before the Berlin Wall came down. After raising her family, she spent 10 years as a correction officer at the Adams County Adult Correctional Complex. She retired in 2016 and currently resides in Littlestown.
