Want To Really Alleviate Hunger?

Maybe it shows up on your Facebook page ... or maybe it arrives in an email. The infographic purports to tell you why certain items are or are not good choices to donate to your local food pantry. Suggestions include donating boxed milk, a can opener, oil, and fresh produce and meat. At this point, you're thinking, "Wow, I never thought of those things," and if you have been donating soup and pasta and peanut butter, you feel like maybe you have not been doing your part.

The Pennysaver contacted Jon Barrett, director of Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), to find out which donations are most helpful to the CV community.

Barrett noted that several of the recommendations on the infographic are generally helpful, including the necessity of can openers when pop-top cans are not available, so donations of can openers to the CVCCS food pantry are welcome. He also agreed that donations of tea bags and coffee and fresh produce are especially appreciated by recipients and that cake mix and frosting are seen as treats. The infographic also recommended donations of dishwashing liquid and feminine hygiene products, which the CVCCS pantry welcomes.

According to Barrett, CVCCS is blessed to receive donations of fresh vegetables from local farmers in season. He noted that fresh, easy-to-prepare items that can be used to make nutritious meals are especially welcome.

Barrett added that it is important for those in need to know that help is available through CVCCS. "Many people do not know we're here. We do our very best to get our name out there. We're constantly attempting to build name recognition so our neighbors know we're here." Barrett noted that he is thankful for a strong volunteer base.

CVCCS operates a choice pantry stocked with nonperishable food items, dairy, meats, and bakery items. The organization is known for providing clients with full meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Readers who wish to donate food items may call 717-208-3711, ext. 106, or email operations@cvccs.org.
