Atglen Scouts To Present Turkey Trot

Cub Scout Pack 20 of Atglen will present a Turkey Trot, a 5K family fun run/walk, on Saturday, Nov. 27, at the Octorara School District campus, 228 Highland Road, Atglen.

Registration for the first-time event will be at 9 a.m., and the walk and run will follow at 9:30 a.m. "Runners will go first and then the walkers," said troop chairman Denim Kurtzhals, race coordinator, noting that attendees can also run or walk a shorter distance. "They also have a short mileage option. They can do one loop instead of two loops."

In addition to being a fundraiser for the Cub Scouts, the event is designed as a way to collect canned goods for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard. Adults will be asked to pay a registration fee, which will be discounted with a donation of two canned goods. Children age 12 and under can participate for free with a paid adult runner and the donation of two canned goods. The first 50 runners to register will receive a T-shirt.

For more information and to register, visit http://www.runsignup.com and search for "Pack 20 Turkey Trot." When registering, participants should use the coupon code "2cannedgoods" at checkout to receive the discount. Canned goods can be placed in the collection bin at registration.

Same-day registration will also be accepted but will not be discounted. Spectators are also welcome to attend and to bring donations for the food cupboard.

Proceeds will help with the cost of Pack 20 activities and provide membership scholarships for those in need. "The troop has been wanting to do a fun walk or run that would include families - something they could do together," Kurtzhals said. "We have been trying to figure out the best venue and decided to have it at Octorara."

Kurtzhals pointed out that walkers and runners will travel the same course that the Octorara cross-country team uses for its home meets.

"We have a course that we will be using that is already created - a 5K distance. The race will be held in the fields surrounding the intermediate school," he explained. "It sort of circles the baseball, soccer and field hockey fields. It's more scenic than running around the track."

Pack 20, led by Scoutmaster Nick Michalski, is open to youths in kindergarten through grade five. Scouts enjoy traditional camping activities and other experiences. In July, they attended Camp Ware Horseshoe Scout Reservation in Peach Bottom, where they participated in archery activities and went hiking. They also built a campfire, where they enjoyed eating s'mores and singing camp songs.

In addition, troop members take part in community service projects. They recently participated in Scouting for Food, collecting donations for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard. They also take part in an annual Christmas tree recycling program by picking up trees after the holidays for a small donation. The trees are used as mulch in local parks.
