Library Plans ExtraGive Activities, Announces Closure

Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., invites community members to stop by on Friday, Nov. 19, to celebrate 10 years of participation in the Extraordinary Give and everything extraordinary about the greater Elizabethtown area. The library will be open with extended hours from 4:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The organization will reveal its new logo and offer special activities, giveaways for new donors and others, and more.

The event will begin with Brett Thackara from ABC27 broadcasting the weather live at 4:30 a.m. During this time, special aspects of the library will be highlighted, and free samples of the library's Roastmaster roasting coffee will be available while supplies last.

Before school or work begins, people can stop by for a cereal buffet from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. There will be a variety of options to mix one's own creation as well as cereal box surprises.

For lunch, Good Guys Chicken & Fries food truck will be on the premises serving food by donation. Lunch will also include a drink and cookies for dessert from Elizabethtown Coffee Company.

Scholastic books purchased through the Office of Commonwealth Libraries Family Engagement Grant will be given away for free to kids. Children will also be able to complete a turkey craft created by Miss Jennifer.

Donation stations will be set up throughout the library so people can make contributions through http://www.extragive.org. All contributions to the library will support the organization's mission of helping people to make their dreams come true. The library seeks to fulfill its mission by stimulating young minds through story times and STEM activities, offering fingerprinting and passport services, and more.

Additionally, the library will be closed for repairs to its elevator beginning Monday, Nov. 22. The library plans to reopen on Monday, Nov. 29, at 10 a.m.

The closure will affect all library services, including passport acceptance services, IdentoGo fingerprinting services and Elizabethtown Coffee Company. Wireless internet access for downloading materials will remain available in the library's parking lot. Materials may be returned in the outdoor book return.

The construction project will address water incursion in the elevator pit. Water comes from a natural spring under the building and penetrates the pit, creating a wet environment, which over time damages the equipment. The library has tried several solutions, none of which has completely solved the problem. The issue was noted again when the elevator was inspected.

In August, the library renewed discussions with local contractors and engineers to find a more permanent solution that will both control the water incursion and move the water completely out of the pit in a manner that is environmentally responsible and that will keep the pit dry. One of the consulting firms is a company that specializes in wet-environment elevators. A three-step solution was decided upon, and construction will begin on Nov. 22.

The library will be closed during construction due to noise, dust and other aspects of the work, as well as the library's inability at that time to move people or materials between floors. On Saturday, Nov. 27, the library will test the elevator to ensure it is fully serviceable.
