Every Friday during Lent, members of the Honey Brook Lions Club are serving up fish fry dinners at the club's community center, 14 Mount Pleasant Road, Honey Brook. The takeout meals will be available from 4 to 7 p.m.

The dinner includes a 6-ounce haddock fillet, homemade macaroni and cheese with stewed tomatoes and cornbread. Additional quantities of each item can also be purchased. Remaining dates for the Lenten fish fries are March 18 and 25, and April 1, 8 and 15.

"The fish is beer battered and deep fried. We make the macaroni and cheese and the stewed tomatoes," said club president Barbara Hannig. "It used to be eat-in or takeout, but because of COVID, it's takeout only. People come in and purchase how many dinners they want and how many extras and we have five or six people to serve them."

Proceeds from the fundraiser benefit organizations that the Lions Club supports, including the Honey Brook Community Library and the Honey Brook Fire Company. The club also sponsors a Leo Club at Twin Valley middle and high schools, as well as Honey Brook Boy Scout and Cub Scout Pack 9, which meet at the community center.

"All the money that we raise goes to the community - every penny," said Hannig.

"There are charities at the district level and the international level that we support," added club member Joe Cutolo, noting that the club collects eyeglasses as part of a Lions Club International program. "We have a (collection) box out front and one at Eby's General Store. They take out the lenses, clean them up and repurpose them."

In addition, the club presents an annual Halloween Parade, a Breakfast with Santa and an Easter egg hunt held on Easter Sunday at 10 a.m. Upcoming events include the second annual Curtis R. Mimm Memorial Golf Tournament, set for Thursday, June 2, at Honeybrook Golf Club.

The Lions Club, which has approximately 30 members including lifetime members, meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 6 p.m. at the community center. "We always have a full dinner at our meetings," noted Hannig. "We are always looking for new members."

While the club is a community service organization, the members also enjoy camaraderie and participating in projects together to benefit the community. "(Sometimes) we work long hours, but we have a good time doing it," Cutolo said.
