Organist To Present Workshop, Concert

Organist Scott Montgomery of Fayetteville, Ark., will present a workshop for organists on Saturday, March 19, and a concert for the public on Sunday, March 20.

On March 19 at 10 a.m., organists and other interested individuals are invited to Lebanon Valley College's Miller Chapel at 32 E. Sheridan Ave., Annville, for a workshop on "On-the-Spot Hymn Playing." Montgomery will examine various familiar hymns and show the process he uses in creating special treatments, adding embellishments, and writing introductions.

On March 20 at 4 p.m., Montgomery will present an organ recital featuring the works of Bach, Byrd, Debussy, Franck, Miller, and Price on the three-manual, 24-rank organ at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey. The organ, built in 1951 by the Aeolian-Skinner Organ Company of Boston, was installed in 2021 at Derry Church.

Montgomery is associate director of music at Central United Methodist Church in Fayetteville and teaches private piano and organ lessons. He is known as a concert organist throughout the country and abroad. He has performed at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia; Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash.; Ball State University in Muncie, Ind.; and Heinz Chapel at the University of Pittsburgh. He has performed for both regional and national conventions of the American Guild of Organists, the Organ Historical Society, National Pastoral Musician Conferences, and Pipe Organ Encounters.
