Presentation To Feature 16th-Century Hymnal

Swiss Pioneer Preservation Associates will offer a presentation, "From Passau to Pennsylvania: The European Editions of the Ausbund," at Martindale Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale Road, Ephrata, on Wednesday, March 30, at 7 p.m.

Joe A. Springer and Lloyd Weiler will display the only known copy of the 1564 Ausbund, which is thought to be the first-known printed collection of hymns still in use today. Found in this first edition are hymns written by Anabaptists imprisoned at Passau in the 1530s. These hymns are numbers 81 to 130 in current Ausbunds.

Springer has served as curator of the Mennonite Historical Library at Goshen College in Indiana since 1986. He will give basic information about the 1564 Ausbund and will speak about other European editions of the Ausbund and how hymns such as the "Loblied" were added. Springer works with many people interested in Anabaptist history. He especially enjoys answering history questions related to printing, hymnody, and genealogy.

Admission is free, and donations will be accepted.

For more details, call Raymond Zimmerman at 717-354-7139 or Weiler at 717-629-1854.
