Program To Feature Music, Poetry

A quartet of performers will present "Before Body Meets Earth" at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster, on Sunday, April 24, at 2 p.m.

"Before Body Meets Earth" blends the formal classical recital with theatrical storytelling to explore ideas of value as seen through the experiences of two characters, portrayed by Chelsea Fingal DeSouza and CodyRay Caho. Michael Lewis, pianist, and Maria Thompson Corley, playing the role of a couple's therapist, complete the ensemble.

The concept for this performance came from an observation that, despite an abundance of modern-day works and productions being created, the expectation remains to prioritize traditional repertoire. The production includes music and poetry spanning over 2,600 years, from Sappho to Dicky Dutton. Of the 25 composers and poets included in this program, 10 are living and seven have lived within the past 100 years. "Before Body Meets Earth" examines the way people exercise empathy with others in their lives; the way people value the works of artists throughout time, place, and experience; and the timelessness of human experience.

A freewill offering will be received, and a minimum donation will be suggested.
