Arts Event To Explore Local Culture

The Arts at Millersville University We The People First Friday will present art and highlight Lancaster's diverse culture with "Acts of Welcome" on May 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

An opening reception for an "Undercover Artists Uncovered" exhibit curated by artist Kristin Hill will take place in the Regitz Gallery, while "Mementos y derivas" by Claudia Rojas, a multimedia artist and native of Cuba, will open in the Lyet Lobby. Both exhibits will be on display through Saturday, June 25.

A performance on the Steinman stage will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a special appearance by the St. James Episcopal Church choir in a musical tribute to Ukraine, followed by traditional song and dance spanning the globe. The program will also include spoken-word pieces about the refugee/immigrant experience by Anna Grutman from Ukraine; Joel Makeci from the Democratic Republic of the Congo; Ever Sandoval from Peru; Aashika Adhikari, Aayusha Chapagai, Sami Subedi, and Apsara Uprety from Nepal; Ahmed Ahmed from Chad; and Amer Al Fayaah from Iraq.
