Barbecuing Their Way To South Dakota

The Lancaster County Junior Holstein Club will hold its annual fundraiser dinner at Little Britain Mennonite School, 352 Nottingham Road (Route 272), Quarryville, on Saturday, April 30, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall.

The homemade dinner will consist of barbecued chicken, cheesy potatoes, baked beans, coleslaw, a roll, applesauce, dessert, and a drink. Homemade desserts will include fruit pies, cheesecakes, whoopie pies, fancy layer cakes, large brownies, lemon meringue pie, and peanut butter pie. Meals will be served in to-go containers, but there will be tables available for those who want to eat in the hall.

Lancaster County Junior Holstein Club members Amber Pownall, Caroline Arrowsmith, Jacob Bramm, and Madelynn Hoffman competed at the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Convention in February. The four members went undefeated in a double-elimination competition at the senior Dairy Bowl. As a result, the club will represent Pennsylvania at the National Holstein Convention in Sioux Falls, S.D. from Monday, June 27, to Friday, July 1.

"Our team works really hard to absorb as much information as possible for the competitions," said Madelynn. "We have a close-knit group that enjoys being together and traveling. I have been really grateful for the opportunity as it has been great preparation for school and my future career."

The event will also feature a silent auction of items, such as gift baskets, homemade jam, brand-new tools, home decor, a fleece knotted blanket, an outdoor bench, a gift certificate for two pounds of fudge from Pepper Lane Fudge, and a rustic wheelbarrow. Amber emphasized that the silent auction will be an integral part of the fundraiser.

All of the proceeds from the dinner and silent auction will go toward funding for club members to attend the National Holstein Convention.

"I'm really looking forward to the fellowship with other Holstein enthusiasts and learning about their influence on the dairy industry," stated Caroline.

"I'm excited to see the dairy farms out West and meet new people," commented Jacob.

Club adviser Mandy Arrowsmith noted that she and the members are very thankful that Bell & Evans will donate 600 pieces of chicken for the dinner.

A price has been set for takeout meals, and attendees are encouraged to make reservations. To reserve a meal or donate items for the silent auction, contact club adviser Betsy Pownall at 717-468-4631.
