Little Free Library Installed In Christiana

Christiana now has its own Little Free Library (LFL), located in front of the Fryberger home, 53 W. Slokom Ave.

The LFL, which invites people to take a book or leave a book, was constructed by Howard Fryberger and his son, Noah, a fourth-grade student at Octorara Elementary School.

"We have seen them before, and I brought it up to my son about building one. We figured now was a good time," said Howard. "We started building it a few weeks ago. (Noah) was hands-on and helped me build it."

The homemade book-sharing box is constructed of lumber, and it is attached to a post, which is secured into the ground with cement. Noah painted the box blue, and a clear sealant was added to protect it from the weather.

"We put a hook on the box so if someone has a dog, they can attach their leash to it, so it's hands-free," Howard noted.

Currently, the book box only contains children's books that Noah has outgrown reading, but it is expected that new books will be added. "Right now, we have books from the kindergarten through fourth-grade reading level," Howard pointed out. "Eventually, people can donate books for adults and young adults. As people give us books, it will be an ongoing process."

Howard hopes that the LFL will promote reading in the community. "It's a very walkable town, and we've already had a bunch of people stop and talk to us and seem interested," he said. "People tell me that they will be using it."

Those who visit the LFL are invited to sign their name to a guest book. "People don't have to give a book. If they want to take a book without giving one, that's OK, too," Howard added.

The Fryberger LFL is registered at http://www.littlefreelibrary.org. It also includes the LFL plaque, which states, "Take a book. Share a book." A listing of other local LFLs can be found at the website.
