Comet Volleyball Wins Two of Last Three

Needing to win in order to remain in the District Three 3A playoff hunt, the Comets took care of business with a sweep over McCaskey Thursday, May 5 and a 3-1 victory over Manheim Township four days later.

After three straight losses, the Comets got back on track against McCaskey. Manor dominated the first set 25-12 and continued with their strong play in set two, winning 25-19. They swept the series against the Red Tornado with a 25-16 third set.

Wyatt Rohrer directed the offense and dished out 28 assists with Luke Thomas converting for seven kills. Max Bushong served up four aces and, in addition to Roman Keefer's five blocks, anchored the defense with eight digs.

At Township Monday night, May 9, the Comets needed four games to get past the Streaks. They dominated game one 25-13 and fought from behind in game two to win 25-21. Township took the third set, leading from start to finish, 25-18 and Manor quickly responded, winning 25-15.

Rohrer (39 assists, 2 aces), Elijah Julian (2 aces), and Warfel (17 kills) highlighted the offense while Bushong (13 digs) and Thomas (2 blocks) led the defense as Manor improved to 6-7 overall.

The Comets hosted Warwick in their last regular match of the season and got off to a great start, taking the first set 25-22. The Warriors, however, rebounded with three straight wins (25-19, 25-18, 25-14) to finish on top. With the loss, the Comets slip to 5-7 in Section One.

Warfel led with a game-high 20 kills due in part to Rohrer's game-high 34 set-ups. Bushong (18 digs), Keefer (3 blocks) and Alex Hunsberger (1 ace) rounded out the stat leaders.

The Comets are currently sitting 18th in the district rankings with the top 16 advancing.

GIRLS' LACROSSE

Keegan Dings went over the 100 career goals mark Friday, May 6, leading the Comets to a 14-12 victory over Central York with a team-high five goals and four assists.

"Keegan scored 33 goals last year and had one as a freshman," pointed out head coach Anneli Starry. "She is currently at 103 career goals."

The Comets fought from behind in this one. Trailing 7-6 at halftime, Manor outscored the hosts 8-5 and improved their overall record to 10-6.

Maddie Weber finished with a hat trick while Erin Shipley and Mia Jones both scored twice. Jarliah Ferko and Johanna Bonnici each added one score.

Mackenzie Nafziger (2 saves) and Brooklyn Ayala (1 save) teamed for the win in goal.

The Comets are currently 12th in the District Three 3A rankings. The top 12 teams qualify.

Dings, Shipley, and Grace Gerner were recently recognized as L-L League honorable mention all-stars while Weber, for the senior with the highest GPA or class rank on the team, made the all-academic team.

SOFTBALL

The softball team clinched the Section One title, their first since 2018 and 11th overall, when Hempfield upset Warwick on Thursday, May 5, and the Comets took care of business against McCaskey. Their 14-0 shutout improved their Section One mark to 13-1.

Manor jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and ended the scoring with a four run fourth, claiming their third shutout in five innings.

Emily Riggs, who went 3-3 with a double, and Kia Green, who was 2-2 with a double, both led with four RBIs. Jordan Bailey and Reagan Soboleski both went 2-3 as the Comets pounded out ten hits.

Julie Bowmaster collected eight strikeouts and walked one batter in the one-hit shutout.

Manor's four-game winning streak was interrupted with a 3-1 non-league loss to Central Dauphin last Monday. The Comets' 1-0 third inning lead disappeared when CD scored three in the bottom of the fourth.

"They made some good plays that saved runs," said head coach Dave Stokes. "We just didn't get the key hits."

Audrey Patterson led Manor's six hits with a 2-3 effort.

One day later the Comets, behind Regan Soboleski's 3-3 outing, wrapped up league play with a 4-2 victory over Cedar Crest. Down 2-0 in the top of the fourth, Manor got one back in the bottom half and took the lead for good with a three-run fifth. Jordan Bailey was 2-2 and Emily Riggs added a RBI double.

Julie Bowmaster struck out four and scattered four hits in a solid effort noted Stokes. Riggs also struck out four and walked one in relief.

Home runs by Green (3-4, 4RBI) and Paterson sparked an 11-0 shutout over Daniel Boone on Wednesday. The Comets led 4-0 in the third, scored twice in the fourth and ended the game with five runs in the sixth. Riggs matched Green with a 3-4 night and push in three runs.

Bowmaster struck out 14 and gave up three hits.

BASEBALL

Playing its fifth game in seven days, the Comets dropped a tough one on Thursday, May 5. After handling Cedar Crest 7-1 in early April, the Falcons split the series, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh to erase a 2-0 deficit.

"I felt bad for Noah Beach, our senior pitcher," said head coach Tom Fish. "He took a shutout to the seventh inning. The timing of a couple of our errors was tough. I think we should have scored a few more runs for him earlier. He had just three hits."

Crest reached on a pair of back-to-back errors, scored two on a base hit and plated the game-winner on a two out single.

Manor jumped in front in the second when Jackson Swarr's sac fly plated Spencer Stuart who reached on a dropped third strike. One inning later, Peter Skiadas singled, moved up on a passed ball, stole third and scored on Bryce Avery's base hit.

Beach struck out three, walked one and scattered seven hits.

The Comets are currently 12 in the District Three 6A rankings.

Needing a win over E-town to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Comets suffered a disappointing 6-0 loss. Holding a 2-0 lead after five complete, the Bears rallied for four runs in the sixth to pull away. Sipel fanned 11 batters in five innings of work and gave up one walk. Beech finished with one strikeout and one walk.

Bryce Avery's 2-3 outing at the plate highlighted Manor's six hit attack.

TRACK

The track teams wrapped up the regular season Monday, May 9 at Cedar Crest. The undefeated Falcons topped the Comet boys' 109-41 while the girls fell 127-22.

The boys showed their strength in the field where they earned four wins. Jaryd Kleinhaus took the shot and Jael Cruz won the discus. In the javelin it was Dhamir Wesley and Josh Doyle going 1-2 while Leo Medvedkin and Drew Lebo did the same in the pole vault.

For the girls' it was Cassidy McCollum with the top javelin throw and Kate Harnish winning the long jump.
