Garden Spot Holds Commencement

The Garden Spot High School (GSHS) Class of 2022 celebrated its graduation on June 6 during commencement ceremonies held in the school gym, 669 E. Main St., New Holland. The event featured speakers from the senior class and the administration.

Michaela Bernek, president of the Class of 2022, welcomed the gathering. Student speaker and Class of 2022 vice president Jewel Boninu spoke on "The Blessing of Change." She noted that change is necessary and that without goodbyes, students might never experience the hellos that lead them to grow into the best versions of themselves. "Whatever mountains you decide to conquer, remember to always welcome new hellos with open hearts and minds," she said.

Student Amanda Wolfe called her speech "A Thanks for Now and Always." She quoted Jeremiah 29:11, in which God reminded the Israelites that He had good plans for them. "Take the unknown as an opportunity to write your own story," she said, asking her fellow classmates, "Are you ready to start a new chapter of your book?"

The Class Officers Tribute was given by Hope Monderewicz, secretary of the Class of 2022, who mentioned that she was honored to serve with Bernek, vice president Boninu, and treasurer Taylor Martin. She announced that the class has donated a willow tree to be planted on the secondary campus during homecoming of 2022.

Eastern Lancaster County School District (ELANCO) superintendent Michael Snopkowski offered remarks, encouraging students to imagine the challenges and opportunities that await them. "The time to use the lessons you have learned has come," he said. "Your time here has not been aimed at this evening. It has been preparing you to look forward to any challenge you may face and say, 'I'm ready.' Your best days and most important moments are waiting for you."

GSHS principal Matthew J. Sanger spoke next, noting that the last few years had presented difficulties that had proven exhausting. He recognized students who had been National Merit Finalists, those joining the armed services, sports medalists and champions, and those who had earned FFA Keystone Degrees, along with many others, by asking them to stand. When the entire student body was standing, he said, "Class of 2022, during the last four years, you have earned my trust, admiration, and respect. The light you have shown has burned bright, and our school and community are better for it. Shine your light to the rest of the world."

The gathering then watched the Class of 2022 video created by senior Noah Darling.

Sanger then announced the names of the class officers who received their diplomas from ELANCO president Johnathan Dahl. After all class members had their diplomas, Sanger presented the Class of 2022.

Sanger then introduced co-salutatorians Emma Burger and Conrad Burrell and valedictorian Jack Bruggeman. He went on to recognize Class of 2022 students who had ranked in the top 10 academically.

Sanger concluded the program with a moment of silence, and the benediction, "The Lord Bless You and Keep You," was sung by Emily Hoffman of the Class of 2023.
